Objective

Most of the schools in UAE feature very inefficient AC, lighting and water systems and the management was looking to reduce the schools energy consumption and carbon footprint. Energy bills of schools amounted to an average of AED 438,000 per annum. If we combine this with the fact that they are very intensive in energy consumption due to long and very hot summer and that electricity and water prices have almost doubled over the last 5 years, then we understand why the utility bill has become a major issue for most of the schools in UAE.

The demand is right there, but the major challenge now is selecting the energy saving solutions which have the highest impact, are relatively easy to install and can be accommodated to all different types and sizes of schools. Through this pilot project, Iris International in collaboration with some of the major schools, assessed the technical and financial feasibility of installing a set of predefined energy saving solutions that could meet all these criteria.

Solution

After completing Investment-grade energy audit and identifying the most cost effective energy conservation measures, Iris International was appointed for the turn-key implementation of the recommended solutions. Iris International guaranteed 28% in annual energy savings.
The energy conservation measures implemented in Schools included the following:

  • Installation of Chiller Plant Manager
  • Control system for FAHU / AFU / FCUs
  • Installation of Evaporative Pre-Cooling System for the Chillers
  • Installation of Aircon Energy Saver on DX Unit
  • Swimming pool heat Pump scheduling
  • Installation of Inverter Split AC units

Since the implementation of the energy conservation measures, schools were able to reduce the energy consumption by 28% per month.

Objective

Most of the villas in UAE feature very inefficient AC, lighting and water systems and are poorly insulated. If we combine this with the fact that they are very intensive in energy consumption due to long and very hot summer and that electricity and water prices have almost doubled over the last 5 years, then we understand why the utility bill has become a major issue for most of the families in UAE. Families living in villas are paying on average AED 22,200 per annum.

The demand is right there, but the major challenge now is selecting the energy saving solutions which have the highest impact, are relatively easy to install and can be accommodated to all different types and sizes of villas. Through this pilot project, Iris International in collaboration with master developers, assessed the technical and financial feasibility of installing a set of predefined energy saving solutions that could meet all these criteria.

Solution

Iris International shortlisted the following four energy savings solutions:

  • Installation of the Aircon Energy Saver, an electronic control device that optimizes the running time of the compressor of AC units.
  • Installation of solar control window films that blocks and reduces the heat gains caused by solar radiation.
  • Replacement of LED and CFL lights for conventional lighting features (halogen and incandescent).
  • Installation of aerators / water reducers in faucets and shower heads which reduces the water flow while keeping same comfort.

For each villa, Iris International conducted a quick energy audit to assess consumption profile and identify the priority areas to implement the predefined solutions. Based on the audit outcome, Iris International team implemented the energy & water devices and measured the consumption with and without to verify the savings. The on-the spot test were later verified through the DEWA bill (October month consumption year-on-year comparison).

Iris International provided a detailed report describing the performance of each of the energy & water saving initiatives and also listed other energy savings initiatives (e.g. water irrigation) that could have a high impact.

The test conducted showed that the average energy savings that could be achieved through the predefined solutions was AED 6,660/year with payback period for the basic investment of only 12 months. Savings were achieved while keeping or improving comfort levels.

Objective

Al-Quoz is a self-contained community that provides accommodation for skilled staff accommodation. The community has been leased by real estate companies. The lease agreement includes energy bills also. Real estate companies was concerned with the high energy bills and wanted to implement a solution which would be easy to install and provide quick returns. Since all Air-conditioning units were DX type they approached Iris International to provide the right solution.

Solution

After conducting a series of performance tests, Iris International concluded that the best solution to be implemented in the DX units is the Aircon Energy Saver.

  • The installation of the Aircon Energy Saver was carried out in 13 buildings in two phases
  • Phase I: 1422 Units, Phase II : 1698 Units.
  • The units were installed in 1.5 tonnes window type AC units.
  • The savings were calculated for the months of April, May and June of 2018, though further analysis was conducted for the month of July, August and September
  • The installation of Aircon Energy Saver showed an average savings of 29.4%
